Scope and Contents The text is closely related to the life by William Roper, but there are interpolations and the dialogues are in the third person. Roper`s preface is replaced by a dedicatory letter to Captain Marmaduke Rawdon from John Hawkins, stating that Hawkins had originally intended to publish the text (Roper`s biography was first published in 1626).
